Holiday Hopes and Dreams

This winter really feels like it is dragging. Normally by now we would have at least one of our storage heaters turned off (central heating is both a hope and a dream for me). During Easter last year, we were in swimming costumes on the beach in Devon. I think this Easter holiday we will need snow boots!

So when online travel site, Clickstay got in touch with me asking what my perfect family holiday would be, I was more than happy to sit back and dream about my ideal way to spend some time off.

If you are a busy family like us, we don’t have the time or energy to visit travel agents. The girls just don’t have the patience to sit there, while the husband and I try to concentrate on the different holiday options being discussed. We always book our holidays online, and Clickstay is just the kind of online company we like to book with, offering loads of fantastic self-catering properties to rent. So if you are getting sick of the gloomy skies, now is the right time to start looking at summer holidays, if anything, just to cheer you up a bit and help you remember winter is not forever!

My girls are 6 and nearly 4, and we haven’t taken them both away together on a foreign holiday yet. They have been in a plane up to Scotland, but other than that we have stayed in the UK for our family breaks.

Now that the girls are older and we don’t have to worry about sterilizing bottles, buying nappies or potty training, I feel the time is coming for us to plan our first holiday abroad as a family of four. We are a bit restricted because I am an anxious flyer, but I don’t want that to hold us back as a family.

Europe is the perfect destination for us, due to short flying times for me, but also we love the different culture and enjoy the food, scenery and open spaces. I studied history at university, and I particularly like European History and the architecture. One of my hobbies, which I hope to develop in the future, is photography; especially of nature, architecture and landscapes. I have loved practicing my photography in Italy and France on previous holidays, and would relish the opportunity to go back now that I have a slightly better camera!

My husband and I really like the simple things in life. We like a nice view, good weather, local food and drink, plenty of space and not many other people around, apart from friends! We find that self-catering holidays really suit us because we can usually find something quite private that we can call our home for a week or two and just settle back and relax. Self-catering also offers that flexibility which is essential when you are holidaying with young children. Just being able to make the food they prefer, rather than worrying if a hotel menu will accommodate their tastes, is much easier, for example. And having open, safe spaces to run around in makes such a difference.

This renovated castle in Italy would be perfect for us: Palazzo Scagliae Castle Gubbio in Umbria.  It sleeps 8 – we love going away with friends. If you are all comfortable enough around each other to spend time in the same place without falling out, then it is a really good way to share the costs. This castle looks amazing to share.

I can just imagine us all eating dinner outside with a few bottles of Chianti, watching the sun set over the amazing view. And it looks a bit off the beaten track too and plenty of grounds for the kids to run around in without worrying about them falling in a pool (our two can’t quite swim yet..). And once the kids are in bed, a dip in the hot tub with a glass of fizz would be amazing.

Luckily my husband is confident driving on European roads, as he used to drive on the continent a lot with a previous job. Car hire would be essential for a stay like this. We would want to explore the local countryside and towns, and using the car is more family-friendly and flexible.

Now, my perfect ADULT only getaway would be to the Island of Santorini in Greece. The island has been been top of my ‘list’ ever since I saw an amazing picture of the town of Oia on Instagram, of all places! I keep dropping huge hints to the husband, but we will probably need to re-mortgage to get a chance of going any time soon! I dream of having a week of just ‘being’, with a comfy bed, infinity pool, amazing view, cocktails, music and books.

I would drink the view in, and I would not want to leave. EVER

With that in mind, I could probably force myself to stay in this luxury villa, if I really had no other choice….
